Drug Induced Toxicity in Treatment of Idiopathic Sudden Hearing Loss

Abstract
|
|
|
Background and Objectives: Treatment plan of idiopathic sudden hearing loss is improvement of vascularity, vascular viscosity, improvement of anti-PLT effect, dilation of peripheral blood system, and inhibition of viral replication.
Surgery such as stellate ganglion blockage and carbogen inhalation therapy was also used. But each drug and other treatment have advantages and disadvantages also. So we evaluate the toxicity of those drugs used for treatment of Idiopathic sudden hearing loss patients and evalaute further treatment modality when adverse effects develops.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study review the patients records in case of Idiopathic sudden hearing loss. Sixty six cases who had been admitted to Hanyang University Hospital from March 1998 to December 2000 were analysed retrospectively several factors such as age, sex, presenting subjective symptoms after medication, evaluate when unpredicted toxicity was devleoped.
Results: There is no definite difference of development of diseases in sex. Patients are most common at 5rd decades. Gastrointestinal trouble was the most common newly developed symptom in hospital, high BP(blood pressure), weight gain, facial flushing and so on. Weight loss was far common in women. After adverse effect developed, all drugs stopped or tapered. Abdominal ultrasonography was done for check, up hepatorenal system. Blood sugar study was done for rule out diabetes melitus and hepatotonic drugs were used for improvement of liver function. No other apparent serious complications were seen. Two weaks after the time of stopping medication, laboratory data were normalized and no
definite subjective complaint were noted.
Conclusion: For treatment of idiopathic sudden hearing loss, we usually order several different drugs which have different effect on disease. We must remind the possibilities of drug toxicity and interaction such as gastrointestinal trouble,
high BP, high blood sugar, generalized edema and weight gain and so fourth. We must remind this point in idiopathic sudden hearing loss patients.
